He and his mates were taken by the fireman to clean some loose dirt from an airway. The fireman examined the roof and tapped it with a stick and pronounced it to be safe. A short time afterwards a large stone fell from a glassy parting in the roof without giving the unfortunate man any warning. Although timber had originally been set at this place it had crumbled out, leaving what appeared to be a hard roof.
