- Details of Event
- Deceased, who had only worked a fortnight at the colliery was coming outbye with his pony drawing two full tubs on a nearly level road 3 feet 7 inches high and in good condition. The drivers do not ride with the full tub as there is not room enough to sit on the coals and the eyebolt of the tub is too high for them to sit on the limbers. He was found lying on his breast on the left side of the road with his head outbye clear of the rails but the first tub was off the way at the fore end and was upon him. The pony was standing hung on the tubs between the rails and the left side of the road. His safety lamp was found under he tubs. The pony was standing quiet. A few yards inbye of where he was found the rails were within 1 foot on the coal on the left side and he may been caught here while walking alongside the tub. Deceased was not registered as required by the Coal Mines Act he had it was stated got work himself and represented his age as 17 which age it was further stated his appearance did not belie. The Local Inspectors reported ‘a pure accident.'
