Details of Event
Deceased, who had only worked a fortnight in the pit, was coming outbye at the end of his shift and was travelling alone down a selfacting incline, 532 yards long, with a gradient of 1.25 inches per yard, on which a set of 30 full tubs started to run against a set of 32 empty tubs shortly after he left the bank head where the brakesman saw him, and warned him to keep on the left side where there was plenty of room to stand clear besides being supplied with manholes as required by law. The sets came to a stand and his body was found at meetings between the 26th and 27th tubs of the empty set (counting from inbye), and the first tub of the full set (also counting from inbye) was opposite the 20th tub of the empty set, the whole of the full set having passed the point where he was found. Deceased was too young to travel by himself. The Local Inspectors reported ‘fail to find anything but a pure accident.'
