- Details of Event
- Died May 28. Deceased was consumptive and was troubled with a tumour in the neck. On January 9th he appears to have suffered some pain from this tumour while following his work, and although he continued working for six days afterwards was, when he put in a claim on the Permanent Relief Fund, allowed compensation. He afterwards complained of the same pain and the doctor who examined him found the tumour enlarged and painted it. He was subsequently sent to Newcastle Infirmary where the tumour was removed, but on his return home phthisis developed and he died from it. The doctor at the inquest said phthisis was the immediate cause of death, but it was perhaps called into activity prematurely by some injury and the subsequent operation, and that any extra exertion would have caused pain. The jury found that he died from phthisis accelerated by an injury received when employed as a landing lad.
