Details of Event
Deceased whose vision was somewhat defective particularly that the left eye, was hurrying at the end of his day’s work on a pay day Friday afternoon to reach the pay office in advance of others and required to cross several lines of rails. On this last line he had to cross next to the pay office a tank loco was bringing forward to the screens 15 empty chaldron waggons at a speed of 5 miles per hour and deceased could hardly fail seeing the train and in addition the engineman kept whistling. Deceased seems to have hesitated and then attempted to cross before the locomotive and he was caught on the left shoulder turned round and run over. He was extricated from under the locomotive (which this drive at once pulled up) in 10 or 15 minutes but was so badly injured that he died while being convoyed to this Ingham Infirmary in South Shields. At the entrance to the pay office is a notice ‘Beware of the Engine.’
