- Details of Event
- Died October, 13. At the end of his shift he came with his pony drawing a loaded tub to the termination of an endless rope haulage road. The rope attendant there took the tub and attached it to the rope and deceased followed it and got on to it to ride out-bye leaving the rope attendant to look after his pony. After putting another tub on to the rope the attendant followed him chasing the pony out-bye. When he was within 10 yards of deceased he heard him shout and saw his lamp jerked up to the roof. Going forward he found deceased lying on the tub with his head in-bye in a helpless condition his back being broken. He lifted him on to the side of the road. The tubs only move at a speed of about 3 miles per hour. The road was in good order the height varying from 4.5 feet to 7 feet but at the point where deceased was caught was a low balk only 1 foot 4 inches clear of the tubs and his caught his shoulder and doubled him back. Riding on the tubs on the endless rope road is not allowed and was a breach of the Special Rules. The Local Inspectors reported ‘Find all things in a satisfactory condition and in our opinion deceased met with his accident through coming in contact with a balk whilst riding on a tub coming out-bye.’
