His coat and hat having been found at the top of a disused shaft, a search party found his body in the shaft at a depth of 35 fathoms. To get to the top of the shaft, he must have climbed over a four feet stone hedge which surrounded it. In addition to the hedge, the top of the shaft was covered with boards, some of which were missing over an area of 1ft. 8in. wide by 2ft. 1in. long. No one witnessed the occurrence.
