27 March 1923: Armadale Miner's Leg Amputated – John O'Brien, machineman, residing at 185 West Main Street, Armadale, was admitted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary yesterday morning suffering from injuries sustained in an accident at Woodend Colliery, where he was employed. Both of his legs were badly mutilated, and the right one had to be amputated. His condition last night was stated to be critical. [Scotsman 28 March 1923]
