- Gas explosion. On Tuesday last week, Francis O'Brien (29), pit brusher, 14 Glasgow Road, St Ninians, was at work in the main level road in the Wallsend seam in No.2 pit, Polmaise Colliery, MilIhall, using a naked light, when a quantity of gas became ignited causing an explosion. O'Brien was severely burned about the face, head, arms and body and was removed to Stirling Infirmary. Here he seemed to be progressing favourably but had a relapse on Friday and died that evening. A sad feature about his death is the circumstance that he was to have been married in a week or two. A most respectable young man of a quiet and obliging disposition. He was liked by everybody who' knew him and his untimely end has evoked much sympathy for his parents who are well known in St Ninians. The funeral took place on Monday and was largely attended. A party of Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from Stirling Castle attended and carried the coffin from the hearse to the grave. (Stirling Observer).
