- Details of Event
- He was hewing in a back lift with another putter in the Brockwell seam, when a stone 4 feet wide, 3 feet long, and 23 inches thick, in the form of a roll came off at a break next the face causing a compound fracture of the leg and other injuries. The calf of his leg was reduced to pulp and although a tourniquet was applied within a short time, it was not possible to stop the bleeding. The accident occurred at 11.40pm and at 1am he had been brought out of the flat, 1.5 miles from the shaft, to his home where the doctor was waiting. The doctor applied two tourniquets but the bleeding restarted when he was being brought into the Durham Infirmary. He died from loss of blood in the Infirmary about 6am.
