A hoppit filled with bricks was not stopped by the winding engineman at the proper place in a shaft which was being sunk and it caught and killed the deceased and injured another sinker. The engineman alleged that a pin came out of the shaft by which the reversing gear is worked causing him to loose control of the engine but under such conditions the result would have been to put steam against the engine and caused it to be stopped more easily.
