He was kirving in a longwall gateway in a seam 21 inches thick, when a large stone 10 feet long, 5 feet wide and 4 inches at its thickest, fell from between slips on to him without warning. The stone came away at a glassy parting, and the maximum timbering distance was not exceeded.
