- The two top beds of the seam had been undercut to a depth of 2 feet, and he was driving a wedge between these beds to break down the lower of the two. This latter had suddenly broken down and the top bed followed it and then toppled over and crushed him against the pack wall built to support the roof. There were two vertical joints at right angles to each other. The joint at the end of the stone was visible prior to the fall; the other was behind the stone and could not be seen prior to the fall. If stays had been set against the top bed, as they ought to have been, the accident would have been prevented.
