Collecting old timber in a working place whilst taking out a tub half-full, a large stone fell on to him, came from a pronounced slip and capped five props. Of 14 Edward Street Rishton was killed by a fall of rock while following his work. The deceased was had gone to collect some old timber on the east road in the mine where the roof and a large stone suddenly fell. Some men were working not far from where the accident occurred heard the crash of the falling roof, and at once went to the spot. The unfortunate youth was completely buried beneath the debris. Willing hands at once set to work to extricate him, and although it was done with great speed, the youth was dead when released half an hour later. The Deputy Corner, said the accident was one of those which were unforeseen, and which happened from time to time in dangerous places where men are working. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death" and expressed sympathy with the bereaved relatives. Mr. Rhodes on behalf of the company regretted that the accident had occurred, and also expressed sympathy with the relatives. (Accrington Gazette.)
