- Details of Event
- Deceased and his brother were working in a 6-foot seam, including a middle band of 2 feet 6 inches thick, worked longwall. The bottom coal and the middle band having been taken out in the left-hand side a shot was put into the overhanging top coal. This was fired, but it left a lot of the coal still standing. It was stated by brother at the inquest that the roof was joaled after the shot was fired. Whilst deceased was getting the remainder of the coal down with the pick he liberated from the roof above him a large cauldron pot 6 feet in diameter and 1 foot 6 inches thick in the middle, tapering to a feather-edge. The pot was perfectly smooth on its upper side, and its pressure had been quite unexpected. It canted out a prop and a plank. The working place was well timbered and packed.
