- Details of Event
- Deceased was engaged in taking out a pump-spear. Scaffolds had been made at the top and bottom of it 49 feet apart. In drawing out the spear a byatt was dislodged from the upper scaffold and dropped upon the lower one. Deceased and his mate went down later and found the plank on the scaffold, but the latter did not appear to have been disarranged by the blow in any way. They tried the scaffold by stomping on it & Considered it safe. They had been at work a few minutes when the scaffold collapsed and deceased was precipitated into the shaft and was killed. It was found afterwards that the collapse was duo to the giving way of one of the boaters on which the scaffold rested. The hearer was of larch, 6 inches square and 7 feet 9 inches long let into the brickwork about 1 foot at either end. The ends of the bearer had decayed considerably although it had only been in position 12 months.
