- Details of Event
- Deceased and three others were standing in the stoke-hole in front of a range of boilers, when the wall which formed the front of the slack-hopper suddenly collapsed and fell in upon them along a length of 57 feet at top and 35 feet at bottom. Deceased who stood close to the wall was buried by the bricks and slack and killed instantly. The wall was feet 9 inches in height, built without batter or cross-ties of any kind in the length which fell. It was 14 inches in thickness for a height of 4 feet and 9 inches in thickness for the remaining 3 feet 9 inches. The hopper was not quite so full as usual when the accident happened. The wall gave no warning, and showed no signs of bulging before it gave way.
