- Fell down shaft. Called out to do a special repair job to the buntons on the deep side of the shaft at No.2 Pit, Polmaise Colliery, Millhall, on Thursday afternoon on the eve of the Fair Holidays, John Murphy (42), colliery shaftsman, 9 Lomond Drive, Bannockburn, fell a distance of 240 feet down the pit shaft, being instantly killed. He was standing with one foot on the top of the cage, the other being supported on the side of the shaft, when the accident occurred. Murphy leaves a wife and a young family of six.
