- Details of Event
- The quarry face has a depth of 70 to 80 feet, and is worked in benches at full face, and at right angles to the face. Slides or runs occasionally occur which destroy the full face benches, and the right angle benches are then worked to make room for the full face. The slides clay is known as wet clay and a small proportion is mixed with the hard clay. Deceased was at work on the second bench from the top, and then mounted to the top to get some wet clay, when a large piece suddenly fell away and knocked him from the bench to the quarry bottom, 46 feet down. The bench was too narrow in proportion to the height from which he was pushed. He died December 28th.
