- Details of Event
- 5 July 1916: Colliery Fatality – About 2.30 yesterday afternoon an accident occurred in the splint coal seam of No.2 Pit, Clyde Colliery, as a result of which Henry M'Kinnon Murdoch (17) pony driver, Beckford Street, Hamilton, lost his life. The deceased brought four hutches to the pit bottom and thereafter brought forward other four. He was stooping to unfasten the tail chain when his head was caught between the rakes, and he was knocked back on to the road. The injured lad was carried to the pit head but expired on the way. Dr Brownlie, who was summoned, was of the opinion that death was due to a fracture of the skull. Murdoch's father is presently on active service at Salonika, and his eldest brother, who is also in the Army, is in England. [Hamilton Herald 6 July 1916]
