He was driving a split through a pillar, leaving a rib 6 yards wide next to the goaf. While drilling a shot hole, a piece of stone came off at a back and fell on him breaking his thigh. A shot which had spent in a clay back had been fired there the previous day and probably it shook the stone. This possibility was well recognised by miners and deputies, and due care had been taken.
