- Details of Event
- Roof fall. Alexander Morton Sen (43), Miner, 88 Main Street, St Ninians was injured in No.4 Pit, Polmaise Colliery on 4 May 1925. He was engaged in clearing away a fall from the roof when a large stone came down and crushed his left hand. Morton was removed to Stirling Royal Infirmary where it was found necessary to amputate the first and second fingers. Dr Anthony Grierson, House Surgeon, Stirling Royal Infirmary stated that Morton was admitted to the Infirmary and the first and second fingers of his left hand were amputated. Septic poisoning set in. He was suitably treated and made progress for two days. Later, however, he developed chest symptoms and abscess of the lung and died, his death being due to the injuries sustained by him at his work. A verdict in keeping with the evidence was returned.
