- Details of Event
- Fall of coal from the face as be was lying down under it holing. The rib had been partially cut, which is not desirable before holing is completed. The coal is said to have appeared strong, and there were two sprags set. It is the old story Sprags were set but they were not sufficient if even well set. So long as men and officials are satisfied with the fact that sprags are set against the face, within 6 feet or the maximum distance allowed by the rules, without considering the question from the point of sufficiency in case the unexpected happens, these fatalities will occur. The necessary position for the sprags for securing the place efficiently is too frequently not considered, or is not understood by the men, and not enforced by the officials.
