- Details of Event
- Deceased and two others were holing at a longwall face in the New Mine Coal. Sprags were set regularly 3ft. apart, and the coal was holed to a depth of 3ft. 4ins. Without warning, a length of coal extending 5 yards along the face fell over, reeling the sprags, and deceased was buried by a portion of it. The coal itself is not of a strong nature, and in addition regular face slips occur at intervals of about 5ft., tending to further weaken it. On this account, it would be advisable to adopt under-sprags where the holing is carried to a greater depth than 3ft.
