Having bored a hole in his rippings for a shot, he was knocking out the posts underneath before leaving off work, when a piece, 5 yards long, 6 feet wide, and 20 inches thick, fell, killing him instantly. The piece being so large and thick, it probably sounded strong. It was given off by a slip and grime, which would be difficult to see owing to the coal sticking to the top.
