He was clearing loose sand from the track of an inclined tramway in a short tunnel. About 20 feet on the dip side of him a wagon attached to a haulage rope was standing to receive the sand. Unknown to him, and in spite of arrangements which had been made with the intention of guarding against such an occurrence, some person signalled to the engineman to haul the wagon up the incline. While endeavouring to escape, he was caught by the ascending wagon and killed.
