Moran was charging a hole 3ft 4in deep drilled in the bottom of the seam for a holing or cleaning shot had put in two paper cartridges of grain gunpowder which doubled in the hole and jammed. He was either driving the cartridge forward with an iron jumper and hammer when the powder exploded or he was unramming the shot.
