- Details of Event
- An old return airway was being cleaned out and re-opened. Deceased was endeavouring to loosen with his pick a large piece of stone in the floor of the road, when a small piece of dirt from the side fell upon him and injured his ribs, and probably he also strained himself. He walked home and considered the accident slight. On the 8th October he died, the medical evidence at the inquest being that ‘death was due to heart failure caused by pressure of fluid in the chest upon the heart, and was the result of the accident.’ A rib had been broken and the heart displaced.
