Moore, accompanied by two other firemen, went to inspect a tunnel rising 1 in 5, in which there was known to be an accumulation of gas. On proceeding past a fence placed by another fireman, Moore's light went out in fire-damp. He placed his lamp on floor, and immediately rushed into the gas, apparently for the purpose of breaking down the brattice to short circuit the air. He was overcome and killed by gas.
