Deceased was making the weekly inspection of the upcast shaft being the competent person so appointed. The shaft is 51 feet deep and means of ascent and descent was by means of three ladders in the stages. It is uncertain whether he was ascending or descending but he evidently fell from the uppermost stage as the fence rail was broken and found with deceased at the bottom of the shaft.
