- 12 May 1917: Cowdenbeath Miner Killed - John Mitchell, 9 Union Street, Cowdenbeath, while attending a coal cutting machine in No.4 Pit, Cowdenbeath colliery, on Saturday morning, was caught by the moving machinery, with the result that his right leg was torn away from the body. He died while being conveyed to the pit bottom. He was 47 years of age, and the support of his widowed mother. This is the third member of the family to lose his life in local mining accidents.
