- Details of Event
- The deceased's duty was to prepare the sets at the bottom of a plane up which tubs were hauled in sets of four by an electric motor, and then walk in front of the set to the top of the road, take off the full tubs, attach four empty tubs to the rope and take them down. This plane dipped at the rate of 1 in 15 and was about 300 yards in length, and the speed at which the sets travelled was ~ miles per hour. The height varied from 4ft. to 6ft. and the height of the tubs was 3ft. 2ins. so that at the low places there was only a space of 10 ins. between the roof and the top of the tub and the roof being hard sandstone there were projecting inequalities in it where the height of the road decreased. He appears to have been illegally riding on the first tub of a full set when his head was caught against one of these low places and he was so seriously injured that he died the following day.
