- Details of Event
- Falls in Mines – Falls of Sides – The lower portion of a shaft used only for air and for accommodating pipes had become damaged and repairs were necessary. A defective steam joint made continuous work impossible. Deceased and another made the damaged part of shaft, as they thought, temporarily safe by removing loose material. They descended 180ft and repaired the joint. Whilst ascending and when about 20 ft. above the joint a piece of stone fell down the shaft and struck Millar on the head. He died the following day. A flat wooden head cover fixed by glands on to the winding rope was broken. There seems little doubt the stone fell from the damaged portion of the shaft, a distance of about 150ft. The top portion of the shaft was used for coal winding operations, and admission to the lower portion was temporarily by means of a wooden “kettle” under the cage.
