- Details of Event
- Deceased was engaged as puller off on the empty side of the cage. he was in the act of pulling of the empty at the same time as the full tubs were being pushed out to the cage at the opposite end, when the cage suddenly lifted and his head was jammed between the tub and an iron rod 4 feet 6 inches up front the rail. The ascending cage had failed to read the keps by a few inches, and the engine driver having reversed the engine the cage dropped 3 feet to 4 feet which jerked the bottom cage proportionately. The landing stage is on the ground floor so that the winder has a good view of the ascending cage. The injuries the deceased received were cuts on the right cheek. He was taken to the Infirmary. Forty hours after admittance he developed delirium tremens, from which he died on October 25th. The House Surgeon said his general condition was unhealthy.
