- Details of Event
- He was drilling a hole, nearly horizontal, into the rock, about 20 feet from the bottom of the quarry, by means of a percussion drilling machine driven by steam, when a column of rock at the bottom of which the drill-hole was started fell away from a back in front and the fast side of it. The stone was about 20 feet in height, and weighed about 12 tons. A craneman saw the stone begin to topple over and shouted to deceased, but probably owing to the noise of the drilling machine he did not hear him. He then shouted loudly and the deceased looked up and saw him stone falling over, and attempted to run. He got about 5 yards away, but the top end of the stone caught and killed him instantly.
