- Crushed in conveyor. An Airth Miner, David Allan (49), Colliery Brusher, 7 Elphinstone Crescent, was killed last night (Wednesday 9 July 1947) at Fallin. Caught and crushed between rollers connected with the conveying machinery, he was badly injured and unconscious when extricated, but on being brought to the surface, he was found to be dead. While engaged in the normal course of his duties at Hartley Seam, No 4 Pit, Polmaise Colliery, Allan appeared to have slipped on a steel spill plate fitted above the conveyor belt at the barrel end. Falling forward, he knocked off the top plate covering the conveyor rollers and his left arm became caught between two wooden rollers. Allan was pulled in by the machinery up to the shoulder and the left side of his head came into contact with one of the exposed rollers. The conveyor was stopped and the belt cut. Willing helpers extricated Allan from the machinery, but when brought to the surface he was found to be dead. (Stirling Observer).
