- This accident occurred in the Brooch Seam which was 4.5ft thick and was bannocked in a clod overlying the coal the bannocking at the time being 3ft. over the coal the face of which was within 3ft. of the coggin. Deceased was shovelling dirt which lay on the floor at the foot of the coal) into the cog when a piece of rock 4ft long 5ft wide and 6ins. thick fell from the roof and knocked him down with his head on the edge of the coal, fracturing his skull death resulting the same day. Props and lids were set 3ft apart, but the piece which fell came from over the lids at its ends. The roof was very loose and jointed at the place and a foreset from the coal to the roof which was set and 10 minutes before the accident at the edge of the piece which fell (but not catching it) probably shook the piece and set it down. 2 killed.
