Deceased acted as assistant to the fore-shift deputy in longwall workings in the Brockwell seam where the roof is post. The stonemen had shot in the top caunch in a gateway during the night and the stone next the face had apparently been sprung by the shot and the deputy examining before the hewers came in noticed this and directed deceased to prop it, and as he (deceased) was preparing to do this a mass of false bedded stone fell on him. The deputy was close at hand. The Local Inspectors reported that they thought 'it was a pure accident.'
