- Details of Event
- This man had been casually employed for some years to trim coal in a hopper. The coal is crushed very fine, and as the slides in the bottom of the hopper are somewhat far apart, it has to be trimmed when the coal gets low. It was not necessary for him to step on the coal where it was thick. It is a dangerous practice as at times when a slide is opened the coal sticks and a cavity is formed. It is presumed he stepped on such a cavity which collapsed under his weight, and the coal closing on him he was suffocated. He was missed by a man working with him, and on a search being made he was found buried amongst the coal.
