- Details of Event
- Deceased and two other men were replacing old timber by iron girders in a flat in the 3rd North district of the Beaumont seam and the master shifter was present superintending the work. A girder had been placed in position and in addition to being supported at each end had a temporary prop under its centre. The next balk and two supporting props had been taken out and one of the men was pinching down loose stones in order to make room for another girder, deceased and the master sifter standing looking on near the last girder. A piece of stone, 4.5 feet by 2.5 feet by 6 inches, was pinched down and in falling struck the centre prop already referred to and knocked it out and cue end of it caught deceased in the stomach, rupturing the small intestine. He was taken to Newcastle Infirmary and operated on the same day, while partially under an anaesthetic, but he died immediately after the operation from shock.
