He was hewing in a seam 8 feet thick when a piece of stone fell from a clay parting close to the face on to his foot and knocked him down. Before he could get clear more stone fell, and his leg was so badly injured that he died on 31st July at the Royal Infirmary, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
