- Washing plant fall. William McNaughton (56), Colliery Engineer, residing at Bandeath Cottages, lost his life as a result of an accident at Nos 3 and 4 Pits on Friday morning (4 October 1918). Along with some other men, McNaughton was engaged at a coal elevator leading to the washing plant, when a chain gave way and the wooden beam and chain carrying a string of buckets collapsed. McNaughton was sitting on one of the buckets and when the mishap occurred, he fell a distance of about 24 feet and was crushed between the buckets and the iron roof of the elevator at the 'chute' on the ground. Extracted with all possible speed he was conveyed to the ambulance room at the Pithead, but his injuries were so serious that he died there about five minutes later. (Stirling Observer).
