- 15 February 1932: Pit Fireman Killed - A distressing fatal accident occurred yesterday in Craigend Colliery, Maddiston, the property of Carron Company. James M'Lay (46), pit fireman, 120 Carronview, Maddiston, was at work in No.8 Section ball coal when an explosion took place, killing him instantaneously. M'Lay had been working at a water sump when a stick of gelignite which he was holding in his hand exploded. No one witnessed the accident. [Scotsman 16 February 1932]
