- 22 June 1918: SHALE MINER KILLED. Last night a young Broxburn shale miner, named William M’Kee, residing at Greendykes Road, was killed by a heavy fall of shale which occurred in Westwood Mine, belonging to Oakbank Oil Company, Ltd. He died while being conveyed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. M'Kee was released from the Army last November to resume his occupation as a shale miner, and in the Royal Scots had seen a good deal of active service in France. He was only recently married.
