- 4 February 1938: Man Killed on Colliery Railway - While carrying out repairs on the colliery railway near Lingerwood Farm, Newbattle, yesterday George Macintosh, aged 65, a platelayer, of Whitehill, Dalkeith, was knocked down and killed by a train of coal trucks being pushed back to the Lady Victoria Mine. A high wind had evidently prevented his hearing the approach of the waggons. [Scotsman 5 February 1938]
