Deceased brought a tub to the face of a heading in the Cockshead seam, and had started to fill it, when a "goth" occurred, and a length of top coal, which had been left up for a distance of 6 yards back from the face, fell from between two slips about 3ft. apart running parallel to the level. The tops had been examined by the collier and were considered safe. Seeing that one of the slips was visible before the fall, and formed the deep side of the heading, it was risky to leave so great a length of tops up unless securely supported.
