This youth, with two others, went into a broken lift to hew after finishing their ordinary work. They had no right to do anything of the kind. He was killed by a stone which fell in the goaf; it is certain therefore that he had not been content to hew in the face but had gone up the side of the lift to pull off loose coal. The accident occurred at 3.30pm., or just about the time work ceased for the day. The deputy at the kist had thus not had time to miss the youths.
