The first accident occurred on Friday afternoon when James M'Dowell (50), who resided at 26 John Street, Blantyre, was struck on the temple by a piece of coal while at work in Blantyreferme Colliery. His workmates gave him immediate assistance, but on reaching the pit bottom he was seen to be unconscious. He was rushed off to the Royal Infirmary where he died on Saturday morning. He leaves a widow and grown up son and daughter. The other tragedy occurred in the early hours of Monday morning in Bardykes Colliery. The victim was Michael Boyle (29) who resided at 199 Glasgow Road, Halfway, Cambuslang. A large stone came away on him from the roof and death was instantaneous.
