- Details of Event
- An inrush of water from old workings took place while the morning shift was entering the mine. Thirteen men had descended; four of these got no further than the shaft foot, when the alarm was raised by those who had preceded them. Six men returned to the surface by the cage, and four men ascended by ladders. The deceased attempted to come up by the ladders, but he apparently got on to a short ladder leading to a pulley, instead of the main shaft ladder, and he was drowned. Two other men were cut off by the water and were imprisoned for five and a half days, but communications were established and food sent down to them by means of a borehole.
