- 4 February 1930: Buried by a fall - Man Killed in Muirkirk Pit. - While at work on Tuesday night in Kames Pit, Muirkirk belonging to Wm Baird & Co Ltd, two road repairers were buried in a heavy fall from the roof, and it took 3 hours before they were liberated. One of the men, John McCulloch (62) residing at 27 Kames Row, Muirkirk, was dead when extricated. The other man, William Kay Gorvan (55), Garden View, Main St, Muirkirk, had a miraculous escape, but was very severely bruised about the head, body, legs and ankles. He was removed home in the works ambulance after medical attention. [Scotsman 6 February 1930]
